The Neal Family

About the Neal Family

Pete and Joy Neal serve with MAF in Kalimantan, Indonesia. As a pilot/mechanic, Pete serves churches and communities in remote villages of Borneo. A typical day might find him transporting pastors for a conference or mission; delivering supplies such as gas, rice or animals; or flying sick or injured people to better medical care. Among the many opportunities that he has to bless and encourage the people he meets, he feels a particular leading to pray with his sick passengers and their families.

Joy is mother to their son, Anders. She enjoys investing in friendships with her neighbors, showing hospitality, and finding ways to serve and support their MAF team.

Pete grew up in Chicago, Illinois and knew from a young age that he wanted to become a missionary pilot. He graduated in 2006 from the School of Missionary Aviation and Technology (SMAT, Grand Rapids, Michigan) with his Airframe and Powerplant certification. Joy also grew up in the Chicago area. It was during her short-term trips in high school (to Guatemala, Kenya and Albania) that she became interested in cross-cultural ministry and living.

Pete and Joy met in youth group when Pete was a senior and Joy was a freshman. They reconnected a few years later and began dating; two years after that, in 2006, they were married. Pete began flight instructing in 2008 and also volunteered with a flight program called Wings of Mercy. After the birth of their son, Anders, and during their last year of classes with Regent University (Pete earning a B.A. in Psychology and Joy in English and Communications), they decided to step toward their vision of serving overseas by partnering with MAF. After a year of stateside preparation and another year of language school on the island of Java, they landed in Tarakan in November of 2013.

The work Pete and Joy do with MAF would not be possible without their generous team of supporters who pray and give financially to the ministry. God calls the men and women of MAF to serve Him in unique ways. He may also be calling you to a special role in the Neals’ ministry. Please prayerfully consider becoming a Ministry Partner with them through prayer and/or financial support.
